Easter in Greece
Hello everybody !
One day after Easter I’m posting some pictures from the class. We dyed eggs, we decorated candles and we made Easter baskets.
In the photograph with the two girls and the flowery baskets two students are preparing to go sing the Lazarus song. This takes place on the last day before we break for Easter. We stop for two weeks.
Here in Greece, Holy Week or “Great Week” as we call it, every day there is something special to do. We dye eggs on Holy Thursday normally and the most prevalent colour is red. If you want to see some more techniques of this you can visit the blog of my other school here.
On Holy Saturday we go to church late at night to celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. Just before 12 o’clock lights go out in church and the priests call the people to receive Holy light. This is the time everybody lights their candles and it is a very moving sight to see the dark church getting lit slowly by candlelight. Then a few moments later the priests sing “Chist has resurrected” and everybody kisses their families and friends and are happy. Then we go home and eat a special soup called “mageiritsa”.
On Sunday we usually roast a lamp on a special spit and have fun!
